This area of research has recently gained importance as new discoveries of the critical biological functions that carbohydrates play a role in, have been identified. Carbohydrates are currently in clinical trials for treatment of a lot of diseases including inflammation and tissue rejection as well as hepatitis and cancer. There are a number of major pharmaceutical companies trying to develop carbohydrate-based cancer drugs indicating the health importance of these sugars.
